Center for the Arts Hosts Pen, Paint, POP! Comic and Cartoon Exhibition
As summer draws to a close, there’s no better way to celebrate the season than with a vibrant lineup of new art exhibitions opening August 7 at the Center for the Arts. Local artists from across the region were invited to have their comic and cartoon pieces exhibited for the Pen, Paint, POP! Exhibition. Eric Darnell’s Battle Bulbs and other keepsakes from Eric Darnell’s collection will take over the Miller Gallery. The Higby Gallery, now an immersive projection gallery, will display projections from the visual art fashion show Eco-Couture. The public is invited to the opening reception Friday, August 7 from 5-7 p.m.
Comic artists and cartoonists, both amateur and professional, were invited to submit their work for this year’s Pen, Paint, POP! exhibition, opening Friday, August 7.
“This exhibition highlights the wide range of styles and creativity that make illustration such an exciting art form, showcasing the talent and imagination of artists working across the medium. From superheroes and fantastical creatures to thought-provoking visual narratives, we can’t wait for everyone to see the talents our community has to offer,” says Jayson Kretzer, Executive Director, Bay Arts Alliance
Pen, Paint, POP! will be on display August 7 – September 19.
Eric Darnell loves transforming junk into art. For his exhibition in the Miller Gallery, he has made 200 tiny robots out of lightbulbs, vacuum tubes, rusty wire, and spare electrical parts. He’s also displaying a collection of things he loves, like a trout he caught in the ’80s, old signs, knick-knacks, and other weird keepsakes. 50% of the proceeds from this art show go directly to the Center for the Arts in support of its vision of putting Art on Every Corner. The Battle Bulbs will be on display in the Miller Gallery August 7-29.
The immersive Higby Gallery will feature projections from Eco-Couture, a stunning visual art show brought together by a heart-filled collaboration between local artists and models. This exhibit is an opportunity to commemorate such a special moment and provide a peek for those who could not make it to the fashion show.
Trash Market, established on Earth Day in 2023, is a grassroots effort to promote sustainability through fun and creative ways. From the very beginning, in the back alley market days, there were whispers among the artists about creating an eco-friendly fashion show.
After three years, Eco-Couture came full circle and became a very proud moment for the Trash Market community. The hope is to inspire others to see the vast potential in items already in existence and too often deemed “trash”. Everyone is invited to join this movement in exploring creative sustainability. Eco-Couture will be on display August 7-29.
The Center for the Arts is free to visit Tuesday-Saturday, 10 a..m- 5 p.m. Open until 7 p.m. on Fridays.
