A New School Year, A New Opportunity

1

From the desk of Superintendent Mark McQueen

As we begin another school year in Bay District Schools, I can’t help but feel optimistic about what’s ahead. There is something special about August. It’s a fresh start, a chance to set new goals, build new friendships, and create opportunities that can shape a student’s future.

This year feels especially meaningful as our nation reflects on 250 years of American history. While we celebrate the remarkable journey that brought us here, we are also reminded that the next chapter is being written today, in classrooms across Bay County. The students walking through our doors this month will become tomorrow’s teachers, engineers, entrepreneurs, healthcare professionals, first responders, and community leaders. Investing in their success is one of the most important things we can do.

As superintendent, I couldn’t be prouder of what our schools accomplished last year. Across our beach communities, Breakfast Point Academy and West Bay Elementary both improved to an “A” school grade, joining Patronis Elementary and Hutchison Beach Elementary as four “A” schools serving our beach area. Arnold High School and Surfside Middle School also continued to demonstrate strong performance, earning “B” grades. These achievements reflect the dedication of our students, teachers, staff, and families who work together every day to make learning a priority.

While we celebrate those accomplishments, we also know that success doesn’t happen by accident. It begins with showing up.

Regular attendance remains one of the greatest predictors of student achievement. Every lesson, every conversation, and every opportunity to grow matters. Arriving on time, prepared to learn, and dressed for success helps establish the habits that will serve students well throughout their lives.

To our families, thank you for trusting Bay District Schools with your children. Your partnership makes all the difference. To our students, we are excited to welcome you back and can’t wait to see what you’ll accomplish this year.

Here’s to a school year filled with learning, growth, and endless possibilities. Together, we’re not just preparing students for the future; we’re helping them create it.
