Shari Young is a local children’s book author who lives in the PCB area. Shari writes with the intent to encourage children to learn about the beach. Her love for the beach and dolphins inspired her book series idea which came to life with book 1, “Learning the Waves by Rylie and Ricki” and continued with book 2 “It’s Beach Time with Rylie and Ricki”. These books offer a great colorful interaction with sea life characters. Ricki and Rylie teach children how important it is to follow the ocean safety rules, how to recognize safety flags, to never go into the water alone, why we need to fill in sand holes to protect sea turtles and humans from serious injury and much more.
In book 1, when Ricki (the sweet little girl) does something where she could be in danger, Rylie (the dolphin) lights up and helps Ricki learn why it is not safe. An example is; When Ricki is about to head to the water; Rylie lights up and stops Ricki, then points to the double red flags. Rylie explains that during double red flags, you cannot go into the ocean. Rylie also reminds Ricki of how important it is not to swim alone, and you should always have an adult family member with you.
In book 2, “It’s Beach Time with Rylie and Ricki” reminds us to practice beach etiquette. This book provides colorful illustrations that easily allow interaction with Rylie, Ricki, and her readers. In book 2 there are several topics and highlights, such as keeping the beach clean. Shari has inspired many young readers to not only enjoy the beach, but she also further provides learning in a fun way.
Book 2 even gets more exciting with 2 new characters, Lily the Sea turtle and Sammy the Seagull. We learn about the beach life, the importance of filling in holes and not leaving garbage behind. Sammy the Seagull gives us some insight on Seagulls too. This book encourages kindness while practicing beach etiquette.
Shari has created a super cute idea within these books: a Dolphin checklist that reminds everyone what to do while visiting the beach. Shari has provided a wonderful way to start communication with your children at a young age to help them learn and become more prepared for beach trips. Safety is always important so make sure you follow all local, regional and federal safety instructions. Enjoy the beach, It’s Beach Time!
