Founded in 2016, Shibumi was built on a simple idea: beach days should be effortless. Inspired by their coastal upbringing in North Carolina, founders Dane, Scott, and Alex spent countless summer days by the ocean, surrounded by family, friends, and the occasional frustrating beach setup. Traditional gear—bulky tents, unstable umbrellas—often got in the way of truly relaxing moments. Driven by the desire to make the beach experience better for everyone, they decided to create a solution.

With no formal design background but plenty of determination, the trio taught themselves to sew and built the first Shibumi Shade by hand. Lightweight, easy to set up, and designed to work with the ocean breeze instead of against it, the Shibumi Shade offered a fresh take on beach shade. What started as a passion project with just 32 handmade shades quickly captured attention. Today, Shibumi can be found on over 800 beaches across the globe, becoming a trusted companion for beachgoers everywhere.

At our core, Shibumi is more than just a product—it’s a promise to enhance the beach experience. As stewards of the coast, we’re committed to protecting and giving back to the places that inspire us. From coast to coast, Shibumi actively supports grassroots events, youth beach camps, and community beach cleanups. We believe in the power of shared experiences and are proud to help foster vibrant, connected beach communities.

Whether it’s a quiet afternoon with a book, a joyful family gathering, or a salty sunrise surf session, Shibumi is there to help make those moments easier, lighter, and more beautiful. With innovation rooted in simplicity and a deep love for the ocean, we’re always looking ahead—designing with intention, giving back with purpose, and staying true to our mission: to make beach days better for everyone.

In April 2025, Shibumi launched its newest product to enhance simple beach days: the Shibumi Beach Chair. Beachgoers can lounge harder in the chair and under their Shibumi Shade, which combines comfort, durability, and ease of transport to the beach.

Shibumi continues to release new limited edition shade colors to match customer preferences. After having only the traditional blue and teal colorway for the first eight years of the company, Shibumi created a pink & orange “sunset” shade in 2024. New colors are dropping every month in 2025: purple & gold launched in March, and blue & orange launched in April. Keep an eye out for future drops this year!
