A Message from Superintendent Mark McQueen

The start of a new school year always feels like a fresh beginning, and this year has been no exception. From my visits to classrooms across Bay District Schools, I’ve been inspired by the energy, the enthusiasm, and the determination I’ve seen in both our students and teachers. There’s a buzz in the air that tells me we’re off to something special.

As we move into September, I want to highlight Attendance Awareness Month. Being in school every day may sound simple, but it’s one of the most powerful factors in a child’s success. Students who attend regularly build stronger connections with their teachers, stay more engaged in their learning, and develop the kind of habits that carry them far beyond graduation. Even missing just a few days here and there can add up quickly, so I encourage families to make attendance a top priority this month, and every month.

Attendance Tips for Families

  • Set a consistent morning routine so getting to school on time becomes a habit.
  • Try to schedule doctor or dental appointments after school hours.
  • Communicate with your child’s school if challenges come up; they’re here to help.

I’m also so proud of the way our students have started the year: coming to school prepared, following expectations, and setting a positive tone for learning. That doesn’t happen without support at home, and I’m deeply grateful to our families for the encouragement and consistency you provide.

Another way to stay involved is through the Focus Parent Portal, which gives you instant access to your child’s grades, attendance, and communication from teachers. It’s also where we keep vital emergency contacts and medical information, so keeping your account current helps us support your student in every way.

Families, thank you for partnering with us. Together, we are one team working to put the “A” back in Bay, and I can’t wait to see all the amazing things our students will accomplish this year.
